The fire warmed his skin, cold from the water. The sky was a dark, Heaven’s gates the only thing that attempted to rival the light from the roaring fire.
Lucifer stretched out his hands toward it.
Going to the beach was fun, but the water always managed to make him so damn cold. It made him remember why he so rarely went swimming (aside from the social aspects).
He glanced up as someone dropped down next to him in the sand, a bottle held out toward him. “Oh, Angie.”
Angel snorted a laugh. “Almost got it this time. Here, gotcha one.”
“Thank you.”
Lucifer accepted the bottle, turning it over to look at the label. It was some sort of human beer with decently high alcohol content.
“Human alcohol doesn’t really do anything to me.”
“Can still taste good though, can’t it?”
He supposed he was right about that. He twisted the cap off with his hand, tucking it into his shirt pocket.
“Do you think anyone’ll mind if I curl up inside the bonfire?”
“Probably.”
“Guess I’ll hold off on that, then.”
Angel leaned in closer.
“Feelin’ cold?”
Lucifer hummed as way of confirmation, pulling his legs closer to his chest, wrapping the arm that wasn’t holding onto the beer around them.
“Wanna sit in my lap?”
Choking on a mouthful of beer, Lucifer coughed.
“Ex-excuse me?”
“What? I run hot. I’m the perfect body pillow.”
Lucifer’s eyes wandered around the beach. Most people were far too busy doing their own thing to pay attention to the two of them.
“...Alright. But only for a minute.”
Angel crossed his legs, patting the space on top of them. “Make yourself at home.”
Hesitating for only a moment longer, Lucifer carefully moved over to him, lowering himself down to sit on Angel’s lap. His hooves pressed into the sand right in front of them as he squeaked in surprise as he felt Angel’s arms wrap around him.
He was going to ask him just what he thought he was doing when he started to feel the warmth spread throughout his body. Angel had been right. He was very warm.
Angel laughed a quiet breath as Lucifer leaned into his embrace.
“Told ya so.”
“I’ll leave.”
“Mmmhm.”
His words were nothing but air. Because yes, Angel was indeed a very good body pillow. He was warm and his fur was soft. Lucifer felt his cheeks burn. Maybe he was getting a little too comfortable. Not that Angel seemed to mind much.
He raised his beer to his lips, the liquid cool on his tongue. From his periphery, he could see Angel take a swig out of his own bottle. He could feel the vibrations in his chest, unbidden.
Shut up, shut up, shut up!
He willed himself to stop, failing entirely.
“Are ya purrin’?”
“No.”
Angel let out another warm, quiet laugh that only made his purrs grow louder. Fuck.
“Look, don’t tell anyone about this.”
“We’re literally in public right now.”
“Doesn’t mean anyone but you can hear me.”
“So ya admit you’re doin’ it.”
Lucifer raised the bottle to his lips to distract himself from his flaming hot face. He didn’t say anything. Didn’t need to.
Angel set down his bottle in the sand, wrapping the last of his arms around Lucifer. He felt his chin rest on the top of his head.
As he stared into the roaring, crackling fire in front of them he thought, oh well. Maybe embarrassing himself a little was worth it, just this once.
Angel’s embrace was way too comfortable to leave before he had to.
